I'm not familiar with Dragon Quest Builders, but my niece plays Minecraft; I'm not really big on sandbox games like Minecraft that, as you say, just drop you into a world and let you create your own objectives. I totally get how that appeals to a lot of people--maybe my issue is that I spend my day job designing and creating things, so doing more of the same isn't really what I want to do when I relax with a video game. It's fun to see the stuff my niece comes up with in Minecraft, but I just have no interest in that style of gameplay for myself.
On the other hand, I love games with narrative and pre-defined objectives, which is why I enjoy Dreamlight Valley so much; while it has some sandbox elements such as being able to decorate environments with a large level of freedom, it also has a fantastic storyline and great character development. While it's nice to collect décor and give my village some personality, I'm honestly mostly there for the story and quests.
So I'm really hoping Pokopia goes more that route. I think it has a lot of potential for a storyline, given that the player character is a transformed Ditto who can understand other Pokémon. I'd love to see each Pokémon get some sort of quirky personality and maybe even its own quest line as you try to satisfy its environmental needs.
(Secretly hoping they somehow include all the Pokémon and the game takes forever to complete.)
