My first spinoff game was my first Pokemon game in general: Pokemon Snap. Although I never played the original gen 1 games, I still like Pokemon through the cards and anime and the other games. We had both a Gameboy and a Nintendo 64, but it seems like my family decided to get Snap for me and my brother. With a brother and neighbors to play games with, it's very hard to prefer to buy single player games over multiplayer games. Even though Snap is a single player game, it's on a console that hooks up to a TV and it's not portable enough to have any difficulties with sharing.
And honestly? I don't like Pokemon Snap. Maybe it's because I didn't understand it as a kid so we had to get a babysitter to beat it for us but it was just too repetitive. It was an okay game at the time but after later spinoffs came out, it's hard to want to go back to it.
My neighbor had Stadium and Stadium 2. Multiplayer games, so me and my brother would go over to his house a lot and play it with him and his sister. Very fun games, I loved it so much. All the minigames are very memorable. Even though we didn't have the mainline games to bring in teams to Stadium for support, it didn't matter, the game was very fun enough by itself.
